Throughout the month of May, Nahcotta proudly presents Allison May Kiphuth’s solo show, Bioconstellation. On view from May 5 until May 28, the opening reception with the artist will be held on Friday, May 5, from 5-8 p.m., concurrent with Portsmouth’s downtown art walk.
This gorgeous show is, for all intents and purposes, a gigantic installation of many small, detailed specimens of a kind, each rendered in watercolor on paper, hand-cut, and painted actual size, true to life. Each individual specimen is its own work of art, independent of the whole, and is available to buyers as such. Kiphuth’s relationship with the natural world is incredibly poignant and runs extremely deep, with her work, to date, conveying a resplendent magic in everything to be discovered in the woods – from howling wolves and bright lunar eclipses to misshapen pebbles and discarded feathers. As a collector of the bones, leaves, stones, plants, and seeds she finds within the world around her, Kiphuth reveres their innate beauty and honors them not only by preserving the actual objects themselves, but by rendering each of them in her work, lending what she describes as a “method of immortalization.”
