Allison May Kiphuth: Transitory

Nahcotta is proud and excited to present the newest work from Seacoast artist and long-time member of the Nahcotta family, Allison May Kiphuth, from May 3 through June 2. The opening reception for Kiphuth’s solo show, titled Transitory, is free and open to the public and will take place at Nahcotta on Friday, May 3, from 5-7 p.m.

Like the title of the show implies, there is a sense of impermanence in this world as we bear witness to its constant transformation and metamorphosis. If you’re fortunate and keenly aware, you may feel the fleeting and momentary experience of resplendence, of wildness, of magic, see the transmutation of nature as it evolves into something new and unknowable, always. Kiphuth sees and feels, bringing these ineffable qualities of perception to life in Transitory and revealing them in their two most distinct states – day and night.

Working once again in small-scale medium, Kiphuth builds enormous worlds using infinitesimal form and imagery. An owl the size of a pinky nail takes flight and we can, somehow, discern every feather. Trees reach to the overcast skies and we’re able to perceive their innumerable leaves sprouting from so many branches. For Transitory, Kiphuth has created two-dimensional watercolor paintings as the ground for isolated cut-paper elements raised from the tangible surface, an approach which has allowed her to “capture all of these subtle atmospheric effects that have previously been a little out of reach - fog, sun flares, sunsets, rain, haziness…”
