Emma Ashby: The Marshlands

From October 6 through October 29, Nahcotta proudly presents The Marshlands, their first solo exhibition of U.K. artist Emma Ashby’s newest body of work.  The opening reception is free and open to the public and will take place at Nahcotta on Friday, October 6, from 6-8 p.m.

For this glorious exhibition, Emma Ashby returned to her native Britain to immerse herself in the marshlands of East Anglia, where she spent her childhood. Ashby says of this newest body of work shown in The Marshlands,I wanted to convey something of the atmosphere and wildness of that unspoiled landscape with its reed-fringed salt-marsh, misty estuaries, sea-clay deposits, and crumbling sandy cliffs.”

Indeed, this work does evoke a visceral reaction, as if the viewer, too, recognizes this space in the world – its inert bogs and meandering bodies of water underneath skies of puffy cumulus clouds. Looking at these encaustic paintings, many of which incorporate clay extracted from the very earth she is depicting, you immediately feel connected to the landscape with which Ashby is so deeply familiar. Her intimate understanding of and relationship to these marshlands invites viewers to share that tangible memory in all its aspects.

With an MA in Textile/Fiber Arts from The Royal College of Art, London and a
BA in Fashion Design from the Ravensbourne College Art & Design, London, Ashby has been showing her work throughout the Northeast for nearly a decade and has regularly taken part in Nahcotta’s Enormous Tiny Art shows.
