Leah Giberson's work explores the intersection between fact and fiction and the search for a more personal truth that lives somewhere in between.
She begins each piece with a printed photograph of a seemingly ordinary and often mundane or cluttered scene, which she then paints directly upon to distill and reveal the visually poignant moments that exist all around us, but are often overlooked.
Glimpses of the more nuanced underlying second stories can be found in the long shadows, reflective surfaces and doors left open. Despite the quiet anxiety and loneliness in these images of isolated trailers, empty chairs, and abandoned pools, there is also a sense of bravery or at least a blind and determined optimism.
Leah Giberson was raised by artists deep in the woods of New Hampshire, though her work typically depicts suburban scenes. She received her BFA in painting from Massachusetts College of Art in 1997 and has lived in Boston ever since.
