graphite on paper

artwork measures 3.25" x 3.25"

framed to 9" x 9"

Zoë lives on a thickety patch of land in central Vermont with her husband, Matt, her son, Iggy, and her dog, Ida. She enjoys drawing, weeding, writing, eating, and playing a game for the bold-hearted called Crazy Puppies (of which Ida is the inventor).

Zoë's drawings are made with pencil, brushed-on graphite powder, and erasers on Bristol paper. She starts with quick sketches and value studies, exploring the angles and curves of her subjects and arranging light and dark shapes. Final drawings are a many-layered process. When a character emerges clearer on paper than it was in her mind, Zoë feels she's shaking paws with an old friend.

This piece is part of Zoë's February 2022 solo show Nightlights. "There's nothing I love better than sitting on my favorite summer-sun-warmed rock at dusk and in the early dark. The stars are peeking out and the sphinx moths are humming in my lilies. Mostly, I can not see anything. But I can hear paws in the garden, and glimpse the neighbor's kitchen light through the woods. It is a comfort to be reminded that the universe is big, and I am just small, sitting on a rock. I hope these drawings capture one twinkle of that magic dusk-to-dark time."
