This piece is part of Mike Gough's collection, The Time Between. Day to night, spring to summer, life to death – these are all transitions. The Time Between is a collection of paintings that use landscape to explore moments lost in change and often lost in memory. The work in this exhibition reflects Gough’s ongoing interest in memory-based art making which first began as an act of preservation. Deeply concerned with the volatile and elusive quality of memory his painterly descriptions of his upbringing in Newfoundland & Labrador become a blend of reality and idealism. Influenced by the provincial landscape and cultural iconography of the province, Gough’s paintings tell personal and universal narratives that offer moments of solitude, opportunities for reflection and possibilities to escape. Whether through image or title they remind us that nothing stays the same but there is beauty in change. “Growing up I took for granted my surroundings and misunderstood my relationship with the landscape. It took distance for me to realize how it shaped me, the metaphors that exist within it and the wonderment and memories that it holds. For those reasons I’ve become invested in landscape painting as a way of reflecting the impressions Newfoundland & Labrador has made on my mind and my heart."

Mike Gough was born in Corner Brook, Newfoundland & Labrador, in 1985. He received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Sir Wilfred Grenfell College in 2007 and went on to attend Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London, England, and graduated with a Master of Fine Arts in 2010.

Gough has exhibited both nationally and internationally in over 40 exhibitions including 12 solo shows. His work appears in private, corporate and public collections in the United States, England and Canada including The Rooms Provincial Art Gallery, Humber College, Sir Wilfred Grenfell College, The City of St. John’s, and Global Affairs Canada, among others.
