This piece is framed mixed media on paper. The 6" x 8" artwork is fitted into a white frame measuring 7" x 9" with a sawtooth on the back making it ready to hang.
Melissa Lakey is an artist based in Joshua Tree, California. She is inspired by the landscape of the high desert as well as a childhood of watching westerns and dreaming of becoming a cowboy.
These paintings were inspired by the magical possibility of night in the desert, the promise of wildflowers in spring, and cowboys who stop to count the stars. I use a variety of materials; gouache, oil pastel, and colored pencil, and try to remain playful in my work. I usually paint without a plan, so the artwork surprises me as it emerges.
