Jeffrey Fitzgerald work begins in drawing, a passion for composition, dividing and activating space. Living in Maine for Fitzgerald is endless energy and rugged beautiful strength. All was lost and gained in fourth grade when the space between letters or negative space became design, graphics, area so considered. Art school in the eighties and his BFA work was big and combative, full of extra contrast and drama, intentionally over the top. With years of crazy enthusiasm behind him, there is now some quiet, much credit goes to his wife and kids. Daily, never to be missed, Jeff captures on scraps of paper/any square will do, a scene, a vignette, a two dimensional story. Rocks, sea and sky are in conversation, characters looking to be seen, explained, defined and decorated. Built in color and brushstroke the painting is now life on canvas. This winter and spring he will be in the city, NYC, most excitedly to find the empire, a new energy and story.
This piece is part of Nahcotta's December 2022 Landscape Show. "The paintings find life, find animation from light falling. Not only falling, but beaming, spotlighting, reflecting off, ambient, cold, warm, rich and diffused; my ephemeral moments color up in light. The canvases are hued constructions of brushstrokes that find home or subject in landscape."
