Donna Calleja creates paintings inspired by her observation of light on the colors and textures found in garden flowers, leaves and fruit. In addition to painting, she enjoys teaching acrylic painting workshops in the Boston area. Her paintings have been exhibited recently in group exhibitions at Storefront Art Projects, Belmont Gallery of Art, ConcordArt, The South Shore Art Center and ETA 31 and 32 at Nahcotta. The paintings included in her ETA 34 collection were created from late 2022 to 2023 in her home studio in Watertown, Massachusetts.
About Donna's collection, Flowers and Fruit, in her own words: "My ETA34 collection of acrylic paintings takes inspiration from my observation of light on the flowers and fruit I view in my home garden and while shopping at local markets. I compose natural forms together for their shape, color and texture from direct observation and my imagination. I enjoy painting flower stems in a vase with water to see the play of light and form in and outside the transparent glass.
My painting process begins with an underpainting that defines a composition of light and shadow. With close observation I add layers of color to build texture and detail. I hope to interpret the stillness and calm I observe in natural objects and hope to provide my viewers with a moment of quiet reflection."
