About the Artist

Mike Howat is a painter working between Greenville, South Carolina and New Hampshire. His work investigates themes of urbanization, Americana, and collective memory, often through the lens of architectural forms.

Collection title: From The Road
My work focuses on vernacular buildings, simultaneously ubiquitous but also inextricably tied to regional identity and the places we call home. These works were made along I-81 and the route from SC to NH, up the Shenandoah Valley, rust belt of Eastern Pennsylvania, the Hudson River into Vermont and New Hampshire—flashbulb paintings, remembered colors, moments from my life in New England and a recent move South. The series captures the fleeting notion of home and place taken from the blurred vantage point of a car window on 70-mph highway and familiar backroads
