Album: Jamie's Song, by Sylvan Esso

Sylva Esso’s single, “Jamie’s Song”, was made in partnership with the podcast Radiolab for their 2015 episode, Elements. The song was inspired by the episode’s opening story, a first-person account of living with and treating bipolar disorder.
The narrator, Jamie Lowe, treats her bipolar disorder with the element Lithium. In the story she tracks the element from its synthesis in Supernovas to discovery on Earth, where it is dug up, shaped into a pill, and used to treat her mental illness. It is a story about the forces shaping the universe and how these same forces shape who we are and what we do.
In addition to being one of my favorite songs, similar scientific ideas frequently manifest in my work. It has been especially meaningful adding to the chain of projects based on Jamie’s story.

About The Artist

Michael uses gouache to render odd narratives about our current time and the far off future. Pulling inspiration from popular science, radio, and literature, themes of a mutating wildlife and changing climate are peppered throughout his work. Born in Massachusetts, Michael now lives in Portsmouth, New Hampshire with his boyfriend and an inappropriate number of house plants. When he is not painting in his bedroom studio he is installing art for the fine folks at Nahcotta Gallery (he really loves his day job).
