About This Collection:

"Behind Doors and Windows"
In my work, I explore collective memory through the lens of architectural landscape. This series reflects my final days in an apartment I called home for eight years, where I focused on painting its doors and windows. The series centers on elusive nocturnal scenes, barely visible through the reflective glass. These intimate interiors serve as a way to explore the uncertain and transient nature of memories tied to familiar places. Doors and windows act as frames, offering fragmented glimpses into something unknowable or incomplete in reflected glass. By capturing these moments of transition and the in-between spaces, I aim to invite viewers to reflect on their own memories—particularly the fleeting and often ambiguous nature of how we remember specific places and the emotions they evoke

Mike Howat is a painter currently based in Metro Detroit. His work examines and depicts themes of urbanization, Americana, and collective memory, often through the lens of regional vernacular architecture. Buildings and built environments act as vessels in his paintings and sculptural works—conduits for exploring regional identity, personal history, and the evolution of place. Howat earned his B.F.A. from the New Hampshire Institute of Art and is currently an M.F.A. candidate at Cranbrook Academy of Art.

Howat has shown nationally, with recent exhibitions at Cove Street Arts (ME), Paradigm Gallery (PHL), Rochester Museum of Fine Arts (NH), Talon Gallery (PDX) and Carrie Secrist Gallery (CHI). His practice has been informed by residencies focusing on site-specific works including as the 2022 artist-in-residence at Gallery 263 in Cambridge, MA and as the 2026 artist-in-residence at Tiger Strikes Asteroid in Greenville, SC.
