Mike Gough was born in Corner Brook, Newfoundland & Labrador, Canada. He received a B.F.A. from Sir Wilfred Grenfell College and went on to earn an M.F.A from Central Saint Martins in London, England. He was the recipient of the Laura Ciruls Painting Fund in 2020 and the winner of the Excellence in Visual Arts (EVA) People’s Choice Award in 2015. He currently resides in St. John, NL.
In Mike's words: “My paintings act as records of my experience becoming a blend of reality and idealism. They are not painted from photographs, the places are not precisely rendered and the experiences are not accurately told, but they are my recollection of them; they are my truths. When I think of home I only think of one place and that will never change, but I hope that the space I provide within each image allows others to cast their own memories and narratives upon.”
