About this collection:
"Mill Vernacular" As part of an ongoing series, Mike Howat uses typologies of "Mill Village" houses in the Southeast and Textile Crescent to explore how we leave imprints on the spaces we live and work. In his practice, Howat is interested in how we interact with our built environments, and how it also interacts with us. The works were created as part of an artist residency in Greenville, SC looking at the manufacturing history in the region.

Mike Howat is a painter currently based in Metro Detroit. His work examines and depicts themes of urbanization, Americana, and collective memory, often through the lens of regional vernacular architecture. Buildings and built environments act as vessels in his paintings and sculptural works—conduits for exploring regional identity, personal history, and the evolution of place. Howat earned his B.F.A. from the New Hampshire Institute of Art and is currently an M.F.A. candidate at Cranbrook Academy of Art.

Howat has shown nationally, with recent exhibitions at Cove Street Arts (ME), Paradigm Gallery (PHL), Rochester Museum of Fine Arts (NH), Talon Gallery (PDX) and Carrie Secrist Gallery (CHI). His practice has been informed by residencies focusing on site-specific works including as the 2022 artist-in-residence at Gallery 263 in Cambridge, MA and as the 2026 artist-in-residence at Tiger Strikes Asteroid in Greenville, SC.
